Pastor Barry Throckmorton
As a child, Barry Throckmorton first heard a call to ministry in his hometown church, Mayodan UMC (North Carolina). Barry recognized Jesus’ call to become a “fisher of men” as a personal imperative, and this call was reinforced through many experiences in his years growing up as a (United) Methodist. However, his life took a turn away from the ordained ministry as the war in Vietnam and the national draft dominated his high school and early college years. He served in the United States Navy for twenty-one years.
During the final years Barry served in the US Navy, he became a certified drug-and-alcohol counselor and actively pursued his call to the ordained ministry. Barry graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Leo University in 1990. After retiring from the Navy, Barry served student appointments at Union UMC (Halifax Co.) and Boydton Charge UMC (Mecklenburg Co.). He received his Masters of Divinity from Duke University in 1996 and was ordained as an Elder in the Virginia Annual Conference in 1998. Barry has also served as pastor of Kenbridge UMC, Peace UMC (Fredericksburg, VA), Grace UMC (Newport News, VA), Granbery Memorial UMC (Covington, VA),and Tabernacle UMC (Poquoson, VA).
Barry and Becky have been married for 43 years. They have two children and three grandchildren. Their son, Chris and his family live in Spring, Texas. Marian (Barry and Becky’s daughter) lives in Williamsburg with her son, Gage.
Barry has experienced many joys in his years serving as a pastor: hearing and sharing the stories of God and God’s people, celebrating communion and baptism, bringing new people into worship, and involving church members deeper in ministry. Barry has valued the profound relationships formed in sharing the joys and sorrows of parishioners. Also, Barry and Becky were privileged to tour the Holy Land with Bishop Pennel.
